Survivors' Wisdom

  1. Acknowledge your courage. It takes courage to acknowledge that we’ve been abused and it is not easy to even admit it to ourselves. Just looking at this web site is a big step.
  2. Know that you are not alone. There are many more survivors of abuse by priests, and other clergy members, than any of us wants to believe. One study from University of Chicago estimates that there are probably about 100,000 survivors of sexual abuse by Catholic priests in the U.S. Most of us believed that we were the only victim of the priest that abused us. Over time we have learned that there is rarely, if ever, only one victim.

Flashbacks

What are they?

Flashbacks are memories of past traumas. They may take the form of pictures, sounds, smells, body sensations, feelings or the lack of them (numbness). Many times there is no actual visual or auditory memory. One may have the sense of panic, being trapped, feeling powerless with no memory stimulating it. These experiences can also happen in dreams.

Choosing a Therapist

It can be a daunting task to begin looking for a therapist to assist in the journey of recovery from sexual abuse. It may be difficult to know what to ask, what not to ask, what are generally appropriate treatment parameters, etc. Since it is important to work with someone you trust, as well as someone you "click" with, these guidelines may be helpful in selecting the right person for you.

Reporting to police: A guide for victims of sexual abuse

Making a report of the abuse you have experienced is an important step in the journey towards healing and justice, but taking this step can be incredibly challenging. This article provides expert advice and information that can be used by survivors who want to make a report, but are worried about the process or aftermath.

It Will Always Be A Part of Me: The Courage of a Survivor

It can be challenging for victims to come forward and grapple with their abuse publicly. This story by Chanel Miller, a rape survivor, is an example of courage in the face of pain and can be inspirational to survivors who are struggling with their own feelings of their abuse and how others will react to those feelings.

One resource that would immensely help me is this: I need someone to look up 1 priest, in the Catholic Registry of Priests, for the years 1968, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, and 1975. I need to know his locations by date for an investigation that is ongoing at this time. I saw this information 25 years ago, but no longer have access to the Registry. IF you could take a screenshot of these few pages, about 8. Email me @

I never knew this site existed until I started taking Alcohol and Drug classes and an assignment was make referrals up on a vignette we were given. This person had sexual abuse from a Catholic Priest. I too was molested at a very young age and was happy to know this site exist. Thanks for coming together, just knowing there are a lot of others helps.

I am so sorry to hear that. When I was in grade school in the 1960’s at St Therese Church in Wilkes-Barre , Pa I had the Sistets of Mercy Nuns. They were so physically, verbally, emotionally and mentally abusive. I carry so much Catholic guilt to this day and I wasn’t even a bad kid. When I was in first grade, my Mother was chronically ill from Cancer and Diabetes. The one night we had to take her to the hospital ( which happened frequently). The next day I went to school and didn’t have my homework done.Sister Christopher knew about my Mom. She made me kneel in front of the class and slapped me across the face. When I cried she hit me over the head with a heavy book. I have psychological problems from years of this abuse as I am sure my former fellow classmates have as well. Monsters for sure

Hello. I was physically and mentally abused by Berna Niewhaus in the late 1950’s at St James parish school in Decatur Illinois. I was not her primary target. We had a boy named Vincent Jolly in our class. He was disabled. Berna beat him almost daily, sometimes in front of the class and sometimes in the coat closet. There is so much more to say about her abusive conduct. Please investigate her conduct on behalf of Vincent and all the other kids who had to cope with this monster.
